Description: Typically in my math classes, I do not separate the following approaches:
1) Problem-solving based, cooperative learning and critical thinking:
Typically in all my math classes (lower and upper levels), within my lectures, I have to
incorporate different types of examples that will illustrate the theory well. By and
large, students learned best when they actually have to get their hands dirty, think
of the problems and then do them. Depending on the problems, I assign them as individual
or group work.
2) Writing, service-learning, and speaking (I added the last one):
In all my upper level (3xxx or 4xxx) applied math classes, a course project is
mandatory. Students, in groups of two or three, will solve a real world problem which is an
application of certain concepts covered in the course. Then they are expected to write a 10
pages or more mathematical report and give an oral presentation to everyone at the end of the
semester. I found this extremely useful, because through their writing, I can actually detect
if students understand the concepts or misunderstood certain theories. And, from the students
perspectives, they claimed to learn via applications and sometimes, these projects lead them to
undergraduate research proposals, which I have to admit, is one of my goals for incorporating
projects! (PN)

Description: I have extensive experience teaching freshman seminars. I also have
given a lot of thought to study skills and learning skills. I have always included these
topics in freshman seminars since many high school students have never learned how to study
and learn complex things. (LP)
