Academy of Distinguished Teachers

ADT Grant Program

The Academy of Distinguished Teachers welcomes and supports proposals from Academy members who wish to initiate projects to enhance teaching and learning at the University of Minnesota. Academy members from all four of the University’s campuses are encouraged to propose collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts that involve other Academy members as well as faculty and staff from other University departments and/or campuses.  One grant proposal, for no more than $10,000, will be funded each year.
The Academy is open to a wide range of proposed projects.   Previously funded projects include:

  • Providing faculty in-service training
  • Exposing undergraduate students to opportunities that help them understand what it means to be a scientist
  • Developing an undergraduate minor
  • Creating a training DVD for graduate students
  • Providing opportunities for graduate students to learn to teach in their discipline
  • Seeding a pilot project for a study abroad program with a strong service-learning component in Costa Rica
  • Developing a program to increase recruitment and retention of women and other underrepresented groups in Computer Science.

All project applications must clearly describe how the work would contribute to the enhancement of student learning or teaching effectiveness. The project application should:

  • Clearly detail the purpose of the project (intended outcomes)
  • Outline the process for implementing project activities
  • Provide information about the faculty and/or staff involved
  • Include a plan for assessing the project’s impact
  • Provide specific budget details
  • Include an explanation of the evidence for the proposed approach, from either practice or research that leads to the belief that the proposed project will have its intended effect

A brief, final report to the selection committee is required at the end of the proposed activities. Typical expenses this grant will support expenses such as food, travel, resource materials, funding for a graduate or undergraduate student to do project-related work, web site development, outside speaker honoraria or conference fees.  While grant funding will not typically support computers or other equipment, specialized equipment specific to the project may be considered.

Grant funds typically cannot support furniture, t-shirts, tutoring, web upkeep, gifts/awards, staff salaries, graduate assistants to teach a course, or faculty buy-out during the academic year.

While grants of all sizes will be considered, the grant award will not exceed $10,000.
